About this place
Kotogahama is a sandy beach in Nima, Oda, Shimane Prefecture (formerly Nima Town, Nima District). It is famous for its singing sand (naki-suna, also called nari-suna), and in 1996 was selected for Japan's Top 100 Soundscapes and Japan's Top 100 Beaches. Length 1.6 km. The whole beach is a swimming beach and is crowded with bathers in summer. A princess of the Heike, defeated in the Genpei battle at Dannoura, drifted ashore here. In thanks for being helped by the villagers, the princess played the koto every day. When the princess died, the sand began to sing like the sound of a koto.
