Overview
The red roof tiles used in Shimane, which shape the look of the coastal villages.
About this place
Sekishu Kawara (Sekishu tiles) are clay roof tiles produced in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture. They are one of Japan's Three Great Roof Tiles, along with Sanshu tiles and Awaji tiles. Using as raw material the clay of the 'Tsunozu Formation,' whose type locality is Tsunozucho in Gotsu, they are produced in Gotsu, Oda and Hamada. Because the firing temperature is high, above 1200°C, they resist frost damage and hold a high share in the heavy-snow regions on the Sea of Japan side, cold regions such as Hokkaido, and Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures near the production area. They account for about 20% of the national share of glazed tiles.
