About this place
Iwami Tatamigaura is a scenic coastal spot in Hamada, Shimane Prefecture. It is also simply called Tatamigaura. Its name comes from the fact that the Senjojiki looks as if covered with tatami mats. In a broad sense, the area is called the Togane Coast, and Tatamigaura is treated as a scenic spot within it. It is designated Hamada Coast Prefectural Natural Park. The area has long been a scenic spot called 'Tokoura,' but in the Hamada Earthquake of 1872 (Meiji 5) the seabed rose about 30 cm, giving the landscape seen today, a fusion of Senjojiki and sheer cliffs.
