Overview
A hot spring in Misato, a cure bath where the water rises through the floor of the tub.
About this place
Chihara Onsen is a hot spring in Chihara, Misato, Shimane Prefecture (formerly Iwami Province). The source water wells up from between the floorboards of the bath, and it is called 'foot-gushing source water' (ashimoto yushutsu gensen). The water is a cloudy yellow-brown with carbon dioxide bubbles coming up continually from underfoot. It is said that the rich components of the hot spring and this bubble effect warm the whole body softly. Because the water is lukewarm, in the cold months from October to June, it is recommended to warm up with an 'after-bath in a goemon bath' heated with firewood directly from the source water.
