About this place
Yuba, a famous product representing the food culture of Nikko, Tochigi. It is the thin film that forms on the surface when soy milk made from soybeans is heated, then lifted off; its origin is debated, but it is said to have been brought from China in the Kamakura period. It was eaten as shojin cuisine by ascetic monks at a sacred site of mountain worship, and ordinary people are said to have begun eating it only in the Meiji period.
