About this place
Irohazaka refers to the slope road of National Route 120 between Umagaeshi in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, and the shore of Lake Chuzenji in the same city. From 1954 (Showa 29) to 1984 (Showa 59) it was in service as a toll road, but it is now open free of charge. It has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Roads, established by the former Ministry of Construction and the Road Day Executive Committee, as a road of 48 curves. Steep gradients and curves continue, and the roadside is famous for its beautiful spring greenery and autumn leaves.
