About this place
Rikugien is a Tokyo metropolitan garden in 6-chome Hon-Komagome, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, and is a Japanese garden (daimyo garden) of the stroll-style landscape garden type with artificial hills and a pond. It is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the nation. Komagome, where Rikugien was made, was then open field. From the Keicho era (1596) to the Genna era (1624), if one asked where Edo referred to, it meant the area called Okuruwa-nai, which today corresponds to the inside of the outer moat, and present-day Bunkyo Ward was Okuruwa-gai.
