Overview
A river of about eight kilometres flowing into Tokyo Bay, with districts such as Nakameguro along it.
About this place
The Meguro River flows east through the eastern edge of the Musashino Plateau, runs through Setagaya Ward, Meguro Ward and Shinagawa Ward in Tokyo, and empties into Tokyo Bay. It is the main stream of a second-class river system. Near the river mouth it was anciently called Shinagawa, and from ancient to medieval times there was the Shinagawa Minato (Shinagawa Port) of Musashi Province. The river mouth topography, where a sandbar (Shiozaki) jutted out in a long, narrow shape and the channel curved with a gentle flow, was suited to a port. Because it was a river where goods (shina) came and went, it is said to be the origin of the place name Shinagawa.
