Overview
A preservation district of traditional buildings, with latticed houses along stone-paved streets.
About this place
A townscape in Kanayamachi, Takaoka. In 2012 it became the first casters' town in the country to be designated a nationally Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. In 1609 Maeda Toshinaga summoned casters and opened a foundry here, and it became the birthplace of Takaoka casting. Houses with thousand-lattice fronts line a stone-paved road of about 500 m, and there are workshops where you can try casting and making tin accessories.
