A town of slopes and stone walls. The name Yatsuo is said to come from eight mountains running from Hida toward Toyama.
About this place
The townscape of the old town in Yatsuo, Toyama Prefecture, where the Owara Kaze no Bon festival is held. Suwa-machi is a narrow sloping town of stones piled up on the mountain slope, with stone-paved roads and rows of houses with lattice doors and white walls. On the west side of Nishi-machi is a townscape of high-piled stone walls and eaves, and the stone walls are said to originate from residents opening a town on high ground to escape flooding in the Edo period.
