About this place
Aragijima is the popular name of terraced rice fields (tanada) in Shimizu, Aridagawa, Arida District, Wakayama Prefecture. Its proper name is Shima Shinden, but the popular name is better known, and the Aridagawa Town website also guides visitors to it as 'Aragijima.' It has been selected for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' 'Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields', the Global Environment Forum Kansai's 'Top 100 Landscapes to Get Close to Nature in Kansai', and the Wakayama Prefecture Tourism Federation's 'Top 100 Morning and Evening Sun Views of Wakayama Prefecture.'
