About this place
Tokugawa-ke Reidai (Tokugawa Family Mausoleum) is a mausoleum (tamaya) at Mt. Koya, the sacred site of Shingon esoteric Buddhism in Koya, Ito District, Wakayama Prefecture, enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu, first shogun of the Edo shogunate, and the second shogun Hidetada. The Tokugawa Reidai stands within the precincts of Daitoku-in, formerly the representative temple of the Koya hijiri and also the family temple and lodging temple of the Tokugawa family, but Daitoku-in merged with other temples in the Meiji period and was abolished, and the Reidai now belongs to Kongobu-ji, the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect.
