About this place
Kokoku-ji is a Rinzai sect Myoshin-ji school temple in Yura, Hidaka District, Wakayama Prefecture. Its mountain name is Shuhozan. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. It was founded in Antei 1 (1227) by Gansho (lay name Kazurayama Kagetomo) of Kongo Sanmai-in on Mt. Koya, to pray for the repose of his lord Minamoto no Sanetomo; at its founding it was a Shingon sect temple called Saiho-ji. Kazurayama Kagetomo took Buddhist vows in Jokyu 1 (1219) on the occasion of Sanetomo's assassination. Sanetomo's birth mother Hojo Masako rewarded Gansho's loyalty by appointing him jito (steward) of Yura-no-sho, where Saiho-ji stood.
