A mountain temple said to date from 860. Climb steps cut into the rock and halls appear on the cliff face.
About this place
Hojusan Ryushakuji, popularly known as "Yamadera" in Yamagata. A sacred mountain of Tohoku founded in Jogan 2 (860) by the priest Jikaku Daishi Ennin, where the whole mountain of strange rocks is a place of training and faith. The place where Matsuo Basho wrote in Oku no Hosomichi a haiku about the cicada's voice soaking into the rocks. From the trailhead to Okunoin is about 1 hour one way, with 1,015 stone steps.
