Overview
A shrine on the main enceinte of Yonezawa Castle, honouring Uesugi Kenshin.
About this place
Uesugi Shrine is a shrine in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. It stands in Matsugasaki Park (the site of Yonezawa Castle) and enshrines Uesugi Kenshin. Its former shrine rank was Beppyo Kanpeisha. It is one of the shrines enshrining domain founders that became popular from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. When Uesugi Kenshin died suddenly at Kasugayama Castle in Echigo in the 6th year of Tensho (1578), his remains were enshrined in Buddhist style at Fushikian within the castle, but when his successor Uesugi Kagekatsu was transferred to Yonezawa via Aizu in the 6th year of Keicho (1601), Kenshin's shrine hall was moved to Yonezawa as well.
