About this place
The Kosugi Great Cedar (Totoro Tree) is a cedar tree in Magarikawa, Sakegawa, Mogami District, Yamagata Prefecture. It is also called the Magarikawa Great Cedar, Meoto Sugi (Married Couple Cedar) and Enmusubi no Sugi (Matchmaking Cedar). It is designated a cultural property and natural monument of Sakegawa Village. The species is the same as the natural cedars of Mogami Gorge, and is also called jindai-sugi (ancient buried cedar). Its estimated age is 700 to 800 years or more, its height is about 20 meters, its root circumference is 6.3 meters and its branch spread is 17 meters. A mountain god is enshrined at its base.
