About this place
Kawanishi Dahlia Garden is an urban park in Kawanishi, Higashiokitama District, Yamagata Prefecture. It is run as a botanical garden specializing in dahlias. It opened on 21 September 1960 (Showa 35). When Kawanishi was founded, the aim was to create a tourist spot representing the town and a park that townspeople could enjoy, and discussions proceeded. As a result, because dahlia growing was enjoyed in the town's Flower Society, it was decided to build a dahlia park. In 1975 (Showa 50) the dahlia was designated the town flower.
