Overview
A hot spring in the hills of Sakegawa, ringed by old-growth forest, with only a few inns.
About this place
Hanezawa Onsen is a hot spring in Nakawatari, Sakegawa, Mogami District, Yamagata Prefecture (the former Dewa Province, and Uzen Province from the Meiji era). The spring quality is a salt-containing sodium bicarbonate spring (mild hypotonic hot spring). It is one of the few geyser-type springs in the prefecture, weakly alkaline at pH 8.4, with a source temperature of 47 degrees Celsius. It is strongly viscous and is called the Spa of Beauty. It has a faint smell of petroleum. Because the spring quality is rare, hot spring enthusiasts also come from outside the prefecture. Though located in a narrow space in the mountains, inns and eateries line the road and form a small but real hot spring town.
