Two shrines in Takahata honouring a dog and a cat that saved the village. Many come to pray for their pets.
About this place
Inu no Miya and Neko no Miya (Dog Shrine and Cat Shrine) are shrines in Takayasu, Takahata, Yamagata Prefecture. They are shrines enshrining dogs and cats, which is rare even in Japan. Many visitors offer photographs and collars to pray for memorial services and the health of their beloved dogs and cats. In winter they may be inaccessible because of snow. Because many people offered pets' belongings at both shrines to ask for memorial services, since 1988 (Showa 63) a national pet memorial service has been held in front of Inu no Miya on the fourth Saturday of July every year.
