About this place
The Hinai chicken is a domestic fowl that has long been raised mainly in northern Akita Prefecture, in the Yoneshiro River basin (Hinai region). It is designated a Natural Monument. This article also describes the Hinai jidori, produced by selective breeding from the Hinai chicken. It is thought that 'the local chickens of various parts of Japan were formed by natural crossing of chickens brought from neighbouring countries such as Southeast Asia and China', but a book published in 1951 (Showa 26) states that 'the Hinai chicken is a breed produced in the Edo period by crossing local chickens of northern Akita Prefecture with fighting cocks'.
