Overview
Held to be Hokuriku's foremost ancient shrine, and the tutelary shrine of eyewear country.
About this place
Funatsu Shrine is a shrine in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture. In the reign of Emperor Sujin, Ohiko no Mikoto was sent to pacify the Hokuriku region, set up camp on Mount O (in Hinodecho, Sabae, a mountain in the city centre with a group of burial mounds), and subdued the rebels. The arrows shot at the enemy in this battle resembled the tail of a mackerel, so the place came to be called Sabaya, and it is also said that Sabaya later became Sabae through corruption.
