About this place
The Wada House is a gassho-zukuri house in the Ogimachi district of Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture, known as Shirakawa-go. It is designated an Important Cultural Property. The Wada family has continued since 1573 (Tensho 1), and successive heads took the name 'Yaemon'. In the Edo period they served as officials at the Ushikubi guard station and as village headmen, and were permitted to have a surname and carry swords. They also prospered through the trade in saltpetre, the raw material of gunpowder. There are various theories on when the Wada House was built, but according to the Agency for Cultural Affairs it was the late Edo period.
