About this place
Ushiku Chateau is a winery in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture. The owner is Oenon Holdings Co., Ltd. Until 2017 (Heisei 29) it was named Chateau Kamiya. It was founded in 1903 (Meiji 36) by Kamiya Denbei under the name Ushiku Brewery. It was Japan's first full-scale winery, adopting French grape varieties and Bordeaux methods of making fine wine. In June 2008 (Heisei 20), three buildings, the former office, former fermentation room and former storehouse, were designated Important Cultural Properties.
