About this place
Shiratani Unsuikyo is a gorge of the Shiratani River, a tributary of the Miyanoura River that flows through the north of Yakushima. Administratively it belongs to Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture. The area is covered with primeval forest, with huge boulders such as Taikoiwa formed by the erosion of granite under abundant rainfall. This primeval forest represents the transition to the dense stands of Yaku cedar that are widely known, and evergreen forest of hemlock and fir grows mixed with laurel forest trees such as Japanese blue oak, Distylium racemosum and Machilus thunbergii. Yayoisugi, a giant cedar about 3,000 years old, is the symbol of the gorge.
