About this place
Yatsushiro Shrine is a shrine in Myokencho, Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is also called Myokengu and Myoken-san. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It consists of three shrines, the Upper, Middle and Lower, and today the Lower Shrine is the main shrine. Along with Soma Myoken in Fukushima Prefecture and Nose Myoken in Osaka Prefecture, it is said to be one of the Three Great Myoken of Japan. According to the 'Myokengu Jitsuroku', written in 1730 (Kyoho 15), the Upper Shrine was founded on the summit of Yokodake in 795 (Enryaku 14). In 1160 (Eiryaku 1), the Middle Shrine was built.
