Overview
People carrying torches parade through the village. One of the three strange festivals of Kyoto.
About this place
The Kurama Fire Festival is one of the annual festivals of Yuki Shrine in Kurama, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. It is counted as one of Kyoto's Three Strange Festivals. Parishioners parade through bonfires lit around the village, carrying sword halberds (four-pole and single-pole), the ropes of the portable shrine and torches, and head for the front of the mountain gate. In 940 (Tengyo 3), Yuki Myojin (Yuki Shrine), enshrined in the imperial palace of Heian-kyo, was moved to the foot of Kuramadera, on the proposal of Emperor Suzaku, as a guardian of the north of the capital and to calm the unrest of the times, with its frequent great earthquakes and conflicts.
