About this place
The Kumano Grand Fireworks Festival is a fireworks display held every year on August 17 on the Shichiri Mihama coast in Kumano, Mie Prefecture. The origin of the Kumano fireworks is said to be 250 to 300 years ago, and the event was handed down with a long history and tradition, following the fireworks of the Mikawa region, where sea transport flourished, and present-day Kumano. In the days of the domain system, simple launched fireworks were set off on August 16 as the pillar-torch fireworks of the first-spirit memorial pine-pulling event at Gokurakuji in Kimoto (now Kimotocho, Kumano). Until the Meiji Restoration, a dozen or so fireworks makers are said to have competed in skill.
