About this place
Onigajo is a scenic coastal spot in Kimotocho, Kumano, Mie Prefecture. It is part of a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty ("Kumano no Onigajo and Shishiiwa"). Numerous sea caves of various sizes, carved by the rough waves of Kumano-nada, line up in steps thanks to earthquake uplift, continuing for about 1.2 km facing Kumano-nada. It is the southernmost end of the ria coast that continues from the Shima Peninsula, and south of here the coast changes to a gentle sandy beach (Shichiri Mihama).
