About this place
Utsukushigahara is a plateau in the north-west of Yatsugatake-Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park, spanning Matsumoto, Ueda and Nagawa Town in Chiisagata District, Nagano Prefecture. It is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. It is a Quaternary volcano that erupted near the western edge of the Fossa Magna. It was once thought to be a shield volcano and its lava plateau, but is now interpreted as the eroded landform of a volcano with andesitic composition. The highest peak is Ogato (2,034 m).
