About this place
Naramachi is an area with a historic townscape in the southeastern part of the central urban district of Nara, Nara Prefecture. Many machiya from the Edo period onward line its narrow streets. When written "Nara-machi" in kanji, the name refers to the area of Naramachi plus the "Nara Kitamachi," "Takabatake" and "Kyobate-Kidera" areas. "Naramachi" refers to the part of "Nara-machi" south of National Route 369. Of this, 49.3 hectares centered on the former precincts of Gango-ji have been designated by Nara City as the Nara-machi Urban Landscape Formation District.
