Overview
Held to be the oldest road in Japan, running from Miwa to Nara and linking burial mounds and shrines.
About this place
Yamanobe no Michi (anciently read Yamanohe no Michi; old spellings also exist) is one of Japan's representative ancient roads and one of the ancient roads of Yamato. It is a road laid through Yamanobe in ancient Yamato (the area name that gave rise to the name Yamabe District). It is known as the oldest road in Japanese history (on record) and the oldest surviving road in Japan. It runs north to south along the eastern edge of the Nara Basin, below the Kasuga fault scarp, threading along the foot of the mountains from the foot of Mt. Miwa in the southeast of the basin to the foot of Mt. Kasuga in the northeast.
