About this place
The Echigo Matsudai Terraced Rice Fields are a group of terraced paddies (senmaida) in the Matsudai area of Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture. They were selected as one of the '100 Villages of Japan' and many tourists visit from all over Japan. The Matsudai and Matsunoyama area in the west of Tokamachi (the former Matsudai and Matsunoyama towns) is hilly, and many terraced rice fields are scattered across it (see the map in the external links). Depending on the amount of snow, the snow begins to melt in April and the paddies gradually appear. The spring water-mirror season runs from late April to mid-June.
