Overview
It prospered as a territory ruled directly by the shogunate. Its money houses financed much of Kyushu.
About this place
Mamedamachi is a district along the Kagetsu River in the northern part of the urban area of Hita, Oita Prefecture. A group of buildings dating from the Edo period onward remains, and the district is designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (hereafter "Judenken district"). On 24 April 2015 it was certified as a Japan Heritage site as a component of "Educational Heritage of Early Modern Japan: The Spirit of Learning and the Roots of Courtesy." This entry also covers the municipality of the same name that once existed in the area.
