Overview
Fortune is read from the sound of a ringing cauldron. It became the subject of a tale in Ueda Akinari's Ugetsu Monogatari.
About this place
Narukama Shinji is a Shinto rite in which a steamer is placed on a cauldron, rice is put in it, and the cauldron is heated with the lid on, and good or ill fortune is divined from the strength and length of the sound it makes. It is also called the Kibitsu cauldron, Okama-harai and kama-uranai. It is a rite believed to have originated in Kibi Province. Generally, the stronger and longer the sound, the better. As a rule, each person who hears the sound makes the judgment. It may be performed by a Shinto priest dressed as a woman, but like kugatachi (trial by hot water) and yudate, it was most likely at first performed by miko.
