About this place
Iwami Kagura is one of the styles of Japanese Kagura. It is handed down as a traditional performing art in western Shimane Prefecture (Iwami region) and north-western Hiroshima Prefecture (northern Aki region). It draws on subjects such as Japanese mythology and has elements of theatre. There are various theories about its origin, but it is said to have already been performed in the Iwami region by the late Muromachi period; it is said to be rooted in Oomoto Kagura, a dengaku-type kagura, and to have formed the present Iwami Kagura as Izumo-style kagura (Sada Shinno), Noh, Kyogen and Kabuki influenced it and increased its theatricality.
