About this place
Kuniga Coast is a scenic natural spot in the north-west of Nishinoshima (Nishinoshima, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture) in the Oki Islands. It was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1938 (Showa 13) and then a National Park in 1963 (Showa 38). It is also called the Oki Kunigakaigan, after its location. It is a sheer cliff coast, with large sea-eroded cliffs of 200 to 250 metres developed over about 13 km; in particular, Matengai, at 257 metres high, is known as one of Japan's largest sea cliffs and is the centrepiece of the coast.
