About this place
Awa ai is indigo dyeing carried out in Tokushima Prefecture (Awa Province), or its materials, the indigo plant (Japanese indigo) and sukumo (indigo balls). It prospered through the protection and encouragement policies of the Tokushima domain and dominated the Japanese indigo-dyeing market. From the late Meiji period it declined under pressure from imports. There are records of indigo dyeing in Awa Province in the early Tensho era under the Miyoshi clan, but systematic breed improvement, cultivation and processing began in earnest after the Hachisuka clan entered Awa.
