About this place
The Hanagasa Festival is a Japanese festival in which people dance and parade through the streets to the "Hanagasa Ondo," holding hanagasa, sedge hats decorated with red flowers. It is held in several places including within Yamagata Prefecture, but the "Yamagata Hanagasa Festival," held in Yamagata every August, is the best known. The four festivals made up of the Three Great Festivals of Tohoku, which have been held since before the war, plus the "Yamagata Hanagasa Festival," which began and spread after the war, are sometimes called the Four Great Festivals of Tohoku.
