What do people get wrong about customs on the way home from Japan?

This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.

The answerThe common misunderstanding is thinking customs is one process. Leaving Japan and entering your own country are two separate sets of rules — and Japan's quarantine service has a dedicated page for the first half.

Most trip planning covers arriving. The return journey gets far less attention, and that is where things get taken away.

Japan's side|what the Animal Quarantine Service says

Travellers taking meat products abroad are advised to contact the Animal Quarantine Service at the departure airport to discuss export inspection. Inspection is required where the destination demands a certificate, and for products from wild animals (deer, boar, quail, pheasant, duck).

Requirements differ by destination and take time to arrange. Early contact is recommended.

[Verify] At the time of writing, export quarantine certificates for pork and wild-boar products were suspended following domestic classical swine fever cases. Confirm current status before publication.

Your country's side|the part visitors forget

Misunderstanding 1|It is all handled by the airline

Airlines enforce cabin and baggage safety rules. Customs and quarantine are separate authorities.

Misunderstanding 2|Duty-free means no limits at home

Buying without Japanese consumption tax says nothing about your allowances. Duty and allowance limits still apply on arrival.

Misunderstanding 3|Declaring things causes problems

Declaring is the process working normally. Not declaring is what creates problems.

Misunderstanding 4|Only food is restricted

Plants, seeds, soil, animal products, some medicines and certain wildlife-derived goods are commonly restricted. Check before you buy, not after.

Misunderstanding 5|Nobody checks

Detector dogs, X-ray screening and random inspection are routine at many borders. Assume it will be checked.
