"You look after your face and forget your neck" is true everywhere, and neck lines and a colour difference between face and neck are often said to give away your age. Here we look at what makes neck skin different, and at sunscreen, moisturising and the "smartphone neck" posture that is much discussed in Japan.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Neck skin | Thinner than the face, with fewer sebaceous glands, so it dries easily. It moves a lot, so horizontal lines form easily |
| UV | The neck and décolleté receive as much UV as the face, or more (open collars). Apply sunscreen to the neck, behind the ears and the décolleté |
| Moisturising | Take your face toner and milk down to the neck. No dedicated product needed |
| Posture | Time spent looking down (phone, PC) is generally described as one factor in horizontal neck lines. Keep the screen at eye level (see our smartphone-neck article) |
| Pillow | A pillow that is too high drops the chin and creases the neck (see our pillow article) |
| How to apply | Upwards, without rubbing. Neck skin is thin, and friction from massage can cause pigmentation |
| What cosmetics may claim | Up to "moisturises the skin" and "makes fine lines caused by dryness less noticeable (efficacy-tested)". "Erases wrinkles" and "improves sagging" are not permitted claims |
| Medical options | Injections, lasers and similar for neck lines are cosmetic medicine (自由診療, jiyū shinryō — private, not covered by health insurance). Ask the doctor about effects and risks |
[Verify] Check the skin characteristics against standard dermatology texts, and the commonly missed spots against the Ministry of the Environment's manual.
Taking your face sunscreen and moisturiser down to the neck covers most of it. Dedicated products differ mainly in texture.
The most a cosmetic may claim is "makes fine lines caused by dryness less noticeable". Deep lines and sagging belong to cosmetic medicine; ask the doctor about effects and risks.
Neck skin is thin, and friction causes pigmentation. Smooth products in upwards, without rubbing.
The neck, décolleté and the area behind the ears receive as much UV as the face, or more. This is the main cause of the colour difference between face and neck.
Accumulated UV and posture play a large part, and horizontal lines from smartphone posture are reported even in younger people. Sunscreen, screen height and pillow are the prevention.
