Wallets, business-card holders and key cases are the leather goods you touch every day, and the oil from your hands plus constant friction change them faster than anything else you own. In Japan this change is enjoyed as "ageing" (経年変化, keinen henka) — a culture of watching leather darken and take on a glow. Here we draw the line between ageing and plain wear, by type of leather and by how it is cared for.
| Leather | Character | Care | Ageing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nume leather (ヌメ革, vegetable-tanned, unfinished) | Darkens with sunlight and hand oil to a caramel colour. Marks easily with water | Monthly: dry wipe, then a thin layer of cream. Some people sun-tan it deliberately at the start so the colour deepens evenly | Changes the most. Wipe water off at once |
| Chrome-tanned, pigment-finished | Stable colour, fairly water-resistant | Dry wipe; for dirt, a little diluted neutral detergent on a cloth | Little change |
| Cordovan (horse rump) | High gloss, sensitive to water | Dry wipe, a small amount of the dedicated cream | The gloss deepens |
| Embossed, patent (enamel) | Coated surface | Wipe only | Almost no change |
| Synthetic leather (合皮, gōhi) | Peels through hydrolysis (after a few years) | Wipe only | Only deterioration |
| Everyday care | Why |
|---|---|
| Do not overfill (cards, coins, receipts) | Loss of shape, strain on the seams, zip failure |
| Do not sit on it in a back pocket | Bends, deforms, splits the seams |
| Do not leave coins or keys pressed against it for long | Metal marks and dark grime |
| If wet, press at once with a dry cloth and dry in the shade | Water marks, mould |
| Cream a few times a year, thinly | Too much makes it sticky and feeds mould |
| Store in a breathable bag with a desiccant | Mould (see the leather-goods article) |

Uneven oil causes soiling and patchy colour. A dry wipe and a thin layer of cream keep it even.
Only vegetable-tanned leathers such as nume. Pigment-finished and chrome-tanned leather hardly change; synthetic leather only deteriorates. Read the label.
Too much makes it sticky, feeds mould and dulls the colour. A rice-grain amount, spread thinly, a few times a year.
The main cause of loss of shape, split seams and zip failure. Carry only the cards you need and take receipts out daily. Do not sit on it in a back pocket.
Seams, zips and snap fasteners can usually be repaired. A few thousand yen at a repair shop. Repairing small leather goods and using them for ten years is how people in Japan tend to use them.
