Rites and traditional events that carry on each area's history, faith and way of life.
A festival with about 1,300 years of history, held in October of the year after a leap year in the old lunar calendar, and designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. On the final day, rites begin before dawn and portable shrines race down Mt. Murone to the temporary shrines in town.
Beginning with a memorial service for the four generations of Fujiwara lords, the festival includes a children's procession and a dedicatory Chuson-ji Noh performance at Chuson-ji, and the Ennen no Mai dance at Motsu-ji. During the period, local performing arts are also presented in front of Hiraizumi Station and in the grounds of both temples.
At Chusonji Temple in Hiraizumi, a memorial service for the four generations of the Fujiwara lords and a children's procession take place on the 1st, local folk performing arts on the 2nd, and Noh theatre on the 3rd. The memorial service begins at 10:00 on the 1st.
