The funerary temple of the Tokugawa. The Sangedatsumon gate survives from the early Edo period.

Local food
What people have long eaten in this place. We collect the dishes themselves, not restaurants.
Edomae Sushi
Seafood pressed by hand onto vinegared rice. It spread as street-stall food in the Edo period, using fish caught in Edo Bay.

Soba
Thin noodles made with buckwheat flour, dipped in a soy-based sauce. They spread in the mid-Edo period as a quick meal.

Monjayaki
Wheat batter thinned with water and mixed with fillings, cooked on a hot plate to a loose consistency and eaten straight off it with a small spatula.

Fukagawa-meshi
Clams, spring onion and tofu simmered in miso or soy broth and poured over rice. Sometimes the rice is cooked together with the ingredients.

Dojo-nabe / Yanagawa-nabe
Loach simmered in a sweet-salty broth of soy sauce, mirin and sugar. In yanagawa-nabe the loach is opened flat, cooked with shredded burdock and bound with egg.

Chanko-nabe
Meat, fish and vegetables simmered together in one large pot. It was developed as the daily meal of sumo stables.
Shima-zushi
Thin slices of fish marinated in a soy-based sauce, pressed onto vinegared rice. Island fish such as tuna, marlin and flying fish are used.

Unagi kabayaki
Eel opened along the back, steamed, then grilled with a soy-based glaze. Opening from the back and steaming is the Kanto method.

Tsukudani
Small fish and shellfish simmered down in soy sauce and sugar as a preserve. It began on Tsukudajima in Chuo ward.

Bettara-zuke
Daikon first salted, then pickled in rice koji and sugar.

Fukujin-zuke
Seven kinds of vegetables chopped and pickled together. It was created in Yanaka, Taito ward.

Kusaya
Fish soaked in a fermented brine called kusaya-eki, then dried.

Ningyo-yaki
Wheat batter poured into moulds and baked, shaped as the Seven Lucky Gods and other figures. It began in Nihonbashi Ningyocho.

Kaminari-okoshi
Processed rice bound with sugar syrup into a firm sweet. It has been sold near Sensoji's Kaminarimon since the mid-Edo period.

Sakura Mochi
A thin wheat-flour pancake rolled around sweet bean paste and wrapped in a salt-pickled cherry leaf.

Imo Yokan
Steamed sweet potato sieved smooth and set with sugar and agar. It was made in Asakusa in the Meiji era.

Negima Nabe
Tuna and spring onion simmered in a broth of soy sauce, sake and mirin.

Noshikomi Udon
Hand-cut wide udon simmered with vegetables and fried tofu in a broth of dried sardine and shiitake.

MICHI-NO-EKI / 1
Michi-no-Eki roadside stations
Rest facilities registered by Japan's national government. Each has parking and toilets open 24 hours, and by definition includes a facility that sells local products. This is where the making and the food of this prefecture can actually be bought.

Meiji Jingu
That forest was not already there. About 100,000 trees, donated from every part of Japan, were planted by volunteer youth groups: an artificial wood. The species were chosen on the assumption that it would become a natural forest centuries later. A design premised on time its designers would never live to see.
Kanda Matsuri
One of the three great festivals of Japan. It was a tenka matsuri, allowed to enter the grounds of Edo Castle.
Nakamise
One of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, lined with shops since the Edo period.
Shinjuku Gyoen
A Japanese garden, a formal garden and a landscape garden share one site. It was once a daimyo residence.
Rikugien
A stroll garden that reproduces places celebrated in waka poetry. Made by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu.

Japanese Serow Born at Inokashira Park Zoo
A female Japanese serow was born on September 21 at Inokashira Park Zoo in Tokyo. Her mother is Suzuna. For health care, mother and calf are staying in a backup enclosure away from visitor paths, and will move to a display area once the calf settles.

From 9 to 12 October, Ueno Zoo keeps its gates open until 8 pm. Visitors can watch nocturnal animal behaviour, join keeper quizzes, hear live music and make badges.
