47 prefectures, seven regions
HOKKAIDO & TOHOKUDairy, potatoes and sugar beet in the north; lacquer, ironware and kokeshi in Tohoku. Iwate supplies most of Japan's domestic lacquer, used to restore National Treasures.
KANTOTokyo alone holds 18 nationally designated crafts — more than any other prefecture. Edo cut glass, kihachijo silk, woodblock printing: crafts made for townspeople, not lords.
CHUBUFukui makes over 90% of Japan's eyeglass frames. Ishikawa makes over 98% of its gold leaf. Gifu fires a large share of the country's tableware.
KANSAIKyoto has 17 designated crafts. Sakai in Osaka supplies roughly 90% of the knives used by professional Japanese chefs. Nara makes over 90% of Japan's ink sticks.
CHUGOKUHiroshima leads the country in brush production, including the makeup brushes exported worldwide. Okayama fires Bizen ware without glaze.
SHIKOKUKagawa makes about 90% of Japan's round paper fans — 83 million a year. Kochi's washi paper is used to restore cultural property around the world.
KYUSHU & OKINAWASaga fired Japan's first porcelain. Okinawa holds 16 designated crafts, third highest in the country — a separate textile tradition from the mainland.
