Kibitsu Jinja (Bingo)
First shrine of Bingo Province. It enshrines the same Kibitsuhiko as the Kibitsu Jinja in Okayama, evidence of the old land of Kibi having been split into three.
Nunakuma Jinja
Its Noh stage is a demountable one tied to Hideyoshi, and an Important Cultural Property. The tutelary shrine of a port where ships waited for the tide.
Kusado Inari Jinja
A kakezukuri hall thrust out over the Ashida river. Its new year crowds are among the largest in the prefecture.
Abuto Kannon
A vermilion Kannon hall thrust out from a cliff. It draws prayers for safe birth and for raising children.
Fukuyama Museum of Art
Unusual in Japan for collecting 20th-century Italian art, and standing next to the castle.
Bingo Kasuri
One of Japan's three great kasuri districts; its toughness made it workwear, and the town later turned to denim.
Fukuyama Koto
Over sixty percent of Japan's koto; the sound is cut into the paulownia body as a pattern of grooves inside the lid.
Fukuyama Castle
A turret moved here from Fushimi survives; its keep was armoured with iron plate on the north face alone.
Rose Park, Fukuyama
Residents planted a thousand roses in a burned-out city - an intention to recover, turned into a landscape.
