About this place
Garyu Sanso is a mountain villa in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture. The garden is a National Place of Scenic Beauty. It was purchased in 1897 by Kawauchi Torajiro, a trader from Ozu who had succeeded in exporting wax. With Yagi Jinbei, a tea-house architect from Kyoto, as adviser, and the carpenter master Nakano Torao, descended from a family of building officials of the Ozu domain, in charge of construction, the project took ten years to conceive and four years to build, needing a total of 9,000 workers, and was completed in 1907 (Meiji 40).
