About this place
Shosenkyo is a gorge in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, on the upper Arakawa River on the north side of the Kofu Basin. It is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and is one of Japan's leading scenic spots. It is counted as one of the 'Five Great Gorges of Japan'. It was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1923 (Taisho 12) and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1953 (Showa 28). Its designated name as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty is Mitake Shosenkyo, though it is commonly written with the standard-kanji form Mitake Shosenkyo.
