About this place
Kushiro Shitsugen (Kushiro Marsh) is Japan's largest marsh and wetland, located on the Kushiro Plain in Hokkaido. Its area is about 26,000 ha, of which the central 7,863 ha is a Ramsar Convention registered wetland. The area designated as Kushiro Shitsugen National Park is 28,788 ha. It spreads across four cities and towns: Kushiro, Kushiro Town in Kushiro District, Shibecha Town in Kawakami District, and Tsurui Village in Akan District. The Kushiro River winds in great bends through the marsh. Lake Toro, Lake Shirarutoro, Lake Takkobu, Lake Eorutonuma, Ponnuma and Sarurunnuma line the eastern side.
