Five lakes scattered through primeval forest. The trail runs through brown bear country.
The sea presses in from both sides, and the land narrows into an hourglass of light.
A pond created as a by-product of works built to hold back volcanic mudflows. Minerals dissolved in the water scatter the light, and the depth of blue shifts with the season and the weather.
Its even cone has earned it the name Ezo Fuji. Spring water is abundant around its base and has long supplied the villages below.
The highest lake in Hokkaido. It freezes over in winter, and the ice formations that appear on its surface have become a fixture of the season.
The tip of the Shakotan Peninsula. A narrow path follows the ridge of a cliff about 80 metres high, with sea on both sides.

A ropeway toward the 2,291-metre summit of Hokkaido's highest peak. Alpine plants are abundant around Sugatami Pond.
A sightseeing train that runs along the edge of Kushiro Marsh. Carriages with open windows let the air of the marsh in.
A bridge near the mouth of the Kushiro River. Statues representing the four seasons stand on its railings, and it is known for its sunsets.
Hokkaido's largest lake. A long sandbar separates this brackish lagoon from the Sea of Okhotsk, and scallop farming is active here.
A mountain wedged between the Tsugaru Strait and Hakodate Bay. The sea presses in from both sides, giving the night view its pinched shape.
