The oldest temple in Hakodate City. It still carries the scars of the Battle of Hakodate.
About this place
Koryuji is a Soto sect Buddhist temple in Funamicho, Hakodate, Hokkaido. Its mountain name is "Kokkazan". It is the oldest temple in Hakodate. 1633 (Kan'ei 10) - Banshitsu Horyu, a monk of Matsumae Hogenji (Soto sect, Eiheiji lineage), founded it in Kameda Village, Kameda District, Oshima Province (now around Bandaicho and Kamedacho). 1706 (Hoei 3) - Moved to the foot of Kosaka. 1795 (Kansei 7) - Enmei Jizo Hall was founded in Toyokawacho (formerly Jizocho). 1869 (Meiji 2) - During the Hakodate War, the former shogunate army used it as a branch of the Hakodate Hospital.
